The Symi Podcast - Too Popular

If you've tried to download The Symi Podcast in recent days you'll be getting the message above from Jelleycast our podcast hosts. Or if you're a subscriber through ITunes, or any of the other Podcast directories, you'll get an error. The Symi Podcast has had a surge in downloads this month which has meant we've exceeded our bandwidth. This should be rectified in the next few days. Apologies for those of you that have been frustrated, and thanks for your patience!

Athan Presents The Symi Podcast #9 - Progressive Mix

This month, The Symi Podcast is a guest mix by the Athenian Dj Athan. I met Athan in May when he came to visit Symi. We talked about music and I mentioned I produced The Symi Podcast. Athan got his first Technics 1210s at the age of 15, and has been hooked on dance music and mixing ever since. DJing in several bars and clubs back home, I mentioned it would be great to feature one of his mixes for the podcast. He agreed, and so this months mix is a personal collection from him.

Athan has mixed some of his favourite new white labels for this podcast featuring tracks from Jozef Mihalik and Babak Shayan. This is not the last we'll be seeing of Athan. Thank you to him for a great mix. Passionate about Symi, passionate about his music maybe one day he'll play here in one of the clubs or bars.

Evangelos - Music From The Soul

Vangelis Vlahakis was born in Heraklion Crete in 1965. He began studying music when he was 15 years old studying the classical guitar with Nikos Froudarakis, in Heraklion, and later with Evangelos Assimakopoulos and Nikos Piperis, in Athens. In 1999 Vangelis was hit by an illness of the nerves called 'conduction block'. This left his left hand paralysed, so he could no longer play the guitar. For 3 years he couldn't even listen to music, knowing in his mind that he was once able to play.

Today, the passion for music and the ability to play has come back to Vangelis. Not only does he play the guitar, he also plays the piano, and harp. Why do I write about Vangelis in this blog? For me the main reason is the way he makes a bridge to all music. Vangelis does not only know the traditional Greek music we've all heard in tavernas and bars around Greece. This is a man that has studied the classics of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Villa-Lobos etc. His true passion for music is probably no different from the rest of us. If it sounds nice, it's nice.

I know Vangelis not only because of his music, but also because he and his wife make excellent jewellery, and even have a shop in Elounda, Crete. We even have his jewellery in our shop here in Symi, and has proven to be very, very popular with people from all over the world.

Visit his MySpace page, grab a drink of your choice, and play the songs he's uploaded. Below are the links, and I strongly recommend you check him out. There is also a link below to the full interview of Vangelis by myriad-online.com

Finally, I'll leave you with a quote from one of his friends:

-Do you play music ? I asked.
-No, but I love the souls of the ones that do

Symi Podcast - Something Different

Tom Fairnie lives with his wife in Edinburgh, Scotland. He's a folk singer/songwriter, and as well as performing solo, is also part of 'The Travelling Waverlies', who perform a mixture of poetry and song and who released their first cd 'Speaking In Tongues' to very good reviews. Apart from music, Tom also has a passion for Symi. So much so that he and his wife wrote a song called 'The Harbour At Symi', which he released on a mini album of the same name.

If you'd like to find out more about Tom, there is a link below. There are also links to purchasing or listening to some of his music, including 'The Harbour of Symi'. You can do so through his personal web site, or ITunes. Happy listening!
